Jeff Hoffman Sheds Light On Illegal Gambling in The Crime Report

Jeff Hoffman (Counsel, New York) authored an op-ed published by The Crime Report entitled “Why is Internet Gambling a Crime?” In recent years, online gambling has become a popular phenomenon though still widely illegal in many places. Some states, including New York where online betting is illegal, have pursued criminal prosecutions against bettors based on laws that were formed long before the emergence of the internet.

“Offshore gambling prosecution has become a source of income to state and federal governments. Based on their statutory ability to seize the proceeds of illegal activity, authorities have levied fines, and seized property and cash.”
